Clinical supervision for practitioners and play therapists is an important aspect of counselor education. Much of traditional supervision is conducted from a logical standpoint; however, some supervisees may be better served when supervisors integrate both logic and creativity.
Creative supervision interventions are suggested to be supportive of mental health supervisees’ professional development.
Current research suggests that engaging in art tasks in supervision is a positive experience for participants, and one that increases supervisees’ self-understanding and teaches a new skill in counseling clients.
This workshop offers a variety of creative activities to be integrated into supervision that can blend well with traditional supervision models. Supervisors have a number of roles and responsibilities, including assuring the welfare of the client; making sure that ethical, legal, and professional standards are being upheld; overseeing the clinical and professional development of the supervisee; and evaluating the supervisee.
1. To assist supervisors to become more comfortable with the use of art in counseling and play therapy.
2. To develop in supervisors an understanding of the use of art in counseling in school, private practice, play therapy and community settings.
3. To assist supervisors in becoming aware of the types of presenting problems that may be positively impacted by art therapy and play therapy.
4. To develop in supervisors some basic tools for using art in counseling; supervisors will learn and practice utilizing art therapy techniques and skills for use with individual clients and groups in private practice and play therapy.
5. To assist supervisors in their understanding of the ethical, multicultural, and professional training issues associated with the use of art in counseling and play therapy settings.
